How house competitions work

House draws work differently from most competitions. The biggest ones do not cap the number of entries, so there is no fixed “1 in X” figure and your chance depends on how many entries are sold. Others sell a set number of tickets, which makes the odds easy to work out.

How to judge your chances

If a draw has a ticket cap, your odds are the tickets you hold divided by the cap. If it does not, look at how long the draw runs, how widely it is advertised and the value of the house. A £3m house on national TV will draw far more entries than a smaller regional draw.

What to check before you enter

Check whether the house comes mortgage-free, whether there is a cash alternative, who pays stamp duty and legal fees, whether bills or furniture are included, and what happens if the draw does not sell enough entries. Good sites set this out in their terms.

Questions people ask

What are the odds of winning a house in the UK?

For draws with a ticket cap, your odds are the tickets you hold divided by the cap. The biggest house draws have no cap, so their odds depend on how many entries are sold and cannot be known in advance.

Is winning a house tax-free?

UK competition prizes are not taxed as income. Check each site’s terms for stamp duty, legal fees and running costs, which vary between draws.

Can you take cash instead of the house?

Many house draws offer a cash alternative. The amount and conditions are in the draw’s terms.

Are house raffles legal in the UK?

Yes, when they are run as prize draws with a free entry route or a skill question. The sites listed above offer a free way to enter.
