How car competitions work

A car competition sells a set number of tickets for one car. When the draw closes, one ticket is picked at random, usually on a live stream, and that ticket wins. Most sites also offer a cash alternative if you would rather have the money.

How to work out your chance of winning a car

Divide the number of tickets you buy by the ticket cap. Five tickets on a 20,000-ticket draw is 5 in 20,000, or 1 in 4,000. Smaller caps mean better odds, even if the ticket price is a little higher. Our odds calculator does the sum for you.

What to check before you enter

Look for the ticket cap, the draw date, how the winner is picked, whether there is a cash alternative and whether the draw goes ahead if it does not sell out. On used cars, check the year and mileage. Good sites show all of this on the competition page and publish their past winners.

Questions people ask

What are the odds of winning a car competition?

It depends on the ticket cap. A car draw capped at 20,000 tickets gives each ticket a 1 in 20,000 chance. The draws above are sorted so the best odds come first.

Can you take cash instead of the car?

Most UK car competitions offer a cash alternative, usually a little below the car’s value. The amount is shown on the competition page.

Are car competitions legal in the UK?

Yes, when they are run as prize competitions with a skill question or a free entry route. The sites we rank all offer a free way to enter.

Do I have to pay tax if I win a car?

Prizes won in UK competitions are not taxed as income. Running costs such as insurance, road tax and servicing are yours once the car is handed over.
